The purposes of this Association are to:

  • A. Promote and protect the interests, rights, and welfare of the retired educators of the Stevens Point area in conjunction with the Wisconsin Retired Educators’ Association (WREA).
  • B. Monitor and work to improve the benefits for retired educators and other members of the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS).
  • C. Encourage Association members to maintain membership in the Wisconsin Retired Educators’ Association (WREA).
  • D. Develop working relationships with local service organizations whose main emphasis is on aging groups and with organizations sharing goals similar to those of the Association.
  • E. Inform Association members about and advocate for educational and other relevant societal issues.
  • F. Inform members of activities in the area provided for senior citizens.
  • G. Encourage Association members to be active participants in community affairs on an individual basis.

2016 October Minutes

STEVENS POINT AREA RETIRED TEACHER'S ASSOCIATION
REGULAR MEETING: On Monday, October 10, 2016, SPARTA met at the Sky Club with 33 present. Attending was guest speaker Greg Wright.
The door prize was won by Nancy Mezyk. Congratulations!
OFFICER'S REPORTS: The secretary's minutes were changed by switching the name "Joyce Chekouras" to "Nancy Kemmeter" for the person who nominated Santha Bickford for SPARTA President. A motion by Charlene Laurent to accept minutes as corrected was seconded by Laurel Hoeth.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Book: Remember to sign the volunteer sheet for working at the book sale which will be held October 19th-22nd. There will be a bake sale on Saturday the 22nd. The sale will close at 2pm Saturday instead of 1pm. Saturday is also the day of "take down". The more helping hands, the quicker the goal achieved.
Historical: Eileen Payne reminded members to feel free to browse through the articles and photos. There is extremely interesting information to remember.
Legislative: Joyce Chekouras made available for all members a handout which included important information about the State Administrators' Association.

Membership: Mary Ann Krems shared how the trend for recruitment is "the simpler the better".
Power of Attorney for Health Care Coordinator: Santha Bickford reminded members there are Q and A sessions held at the Lincoln Center. If you have questions about Healthcare Advanced Directives please contact her or Joan Gilles.
Social: Eileen Payne mentioned there is a trip to be planned through the Lincoln Center. An announcement with definitive plans will be made in the Spring. Suggestions are most welcome.
Sunshine: Suzanne Fee and Mary Anday have sent cards of support to the Robert Rosmiller family as well as Shirley Multhauf and Lillian Spangenberg.
Volunteer Hours Recorder: Joyce Chekouras, while attending the 2016 WREA Convention, learned the volunteer forms are being looked at to see if they can be changed/ improved. 48 people from SPARTA submitted volunteer hours for a total of 8800 hours. Sixty five charitable organizations were affected. Continue to record!
ONGOING BUSINESS: Discussion began about the development of a SPARTA web site/blog. Would this help with member and community communication?
The 2016 WREA Convention attendees each shared a highlight from their experience.

American Education Week is November 14-18th. Sign up to recognize our educators.
Santha Bickford asked for volunteers for the Grant Awards Committee. Its' policy needs to be updated.
FORMAL PROGRAM: Greg Wright, former Stevens Point Public School student, presented the "Arts Alliance of Portage County: Rejuvenating Downtown Stevens Point" program. Many creative ideas are being explored. Greg passed out brochures.
NEXT MEETING: On Monday, November 14, 2016 at the Sky Club. The program will be "Helping War Victims" by Jim Harris.
A motion to adjourn was made by Janet Swiston and seconded by Ann Eggleston.
